Accessibility statements
Create and publish an accessibility statement for your service.
Every website managed or largely funded by Camden must publish an up-to-date accessibility statement. This should be a dedicated statement that relates clearly to the site’s design.
An accessibility statement helps users understand any barriers they may encounter when using your website and the possible workarounds.
Your statement is also a record of your website’s compliance. It may be reviewed by the Government Digital Service, which monitors public body websites to check if they meet the regulations.
Before you start
Before writing a new accessibility statement, make sure you have completed both automated and manual testing.
You should have a record of your testing and a plan to fix any issues.
Writing an accessibility statement
An accessibility statement needs to include specific things to be compliant, and some wording is mandatory. Use GOV.UK’s model accessibility statement to make sure you include everything you need.
You need to update the model statement with:
- details of your site
- the level of WCAG 2.2 compliance
- a list of any non-accessible content
- when you plan to fix the non-compliances
- when the statement was last updated and how it was tested
- how users can give feedback about accessibility issues
Publishing the statement
To publish your accessibility statement, send it with your testing report to webaccessibility@camden.gov.uk
Camden's platform development team will check the testing report and accessibility statement and give support if needed.
Once finalised, the statement can then be published on camden.gov.uk or the relevant website.
Where to publish your statement
Your accessibility statement should be published:
- on camden.gov.uk, if you access the site on camden.gov.uk or if it is a subdomain of camden.gov.uk (for example, families.camden.gov.uk)
- on your website, if the site is largely funded by Camden but not a subdomain of camden.gov.uk (for example, camdencommunitywealthfund.co.uk/)
In either case, the statement needs to be linked globally on your website. This should ideally be in the footer.
If your statement needs to be published on camden.gov.uk, email webaccessibility@camden.gov.uk
Maintaining and updating your statement
Accessibility statements should be updated at least annually, and after major website releases and improvements.
Even if no additional testing has been done, you need to review your accessibility statement every year. This regular review process shows ongoing compliance with accessibility standards.
Camden's platform development team maintain a log of when statements were last updated for websites in Camden’s digital estate. When your statement is due to be updated, you will be sent a reminder.
The team will check:
- progress on any issues listed in the statement
- if there have been any significant changes to the website which would require it to be retested
Where a site needs to be retested, repeat the process outlined in this accessibility guidance.
